The Gift

Salvaged Teak, Red Oak, and Black Walnut, Leather, Paper, 16 pieces, Dimensions Variable, 2011

“The Gift” was a performance piece in which the artist gave away sixteen hand-carved wood sculptures to members of the audience. Each piece was crafted entirely by hand using traditional african wood tools. Each gift was accompanied by a hand-made leather envelope carrying a certificate of ownership for the piece. During the performance, each new owner signed his/her certificate and accepted full stewardship of the artwork under the solitary condition that eventually he/she would give it to someone else. “The Gift” is now a long-term participatory traveling artwork.
